Pupil voice at Pentrehafod School is central to everything that we do. As a Rights Respecting Gold award school we feel that valuing pupil’s opinions and thoughts is crucial to their learning and development.
The Student Parliament at Pentrehafod is the vehicle in which we promote student voice, which enables all pupils to have their voice heard.
This year is the seventh year that the Student Parliament has been running at Pentrehafod School, and it’s growth has been very impressive.
Last year, the Student Parliament worked closely with Swansea University to conduct research within their cabinets. Pentrehafod was the only Comprehensive School to get this opportunity, as we are recognised as a pupil centered school with a Student parliament structure that mirrors our governing body.
The outcomes of their research have had a significant impact on the whole school. The four cabinets had research questions to carry out and the impact is as follows:
* Teaching and Learning Cabinet – Created the new T&L charter and surveyed pupils on how they interact in class. This is now used for Teaching and Learning across the school
* Standards and Provision Cabinet – Initiated the new uniform change and helped to promote and introduce the new uniform.
* Ethos & wellbeing Cabinet – Improving the accessibility of the student parliament. This year this cabinet will look at the promotion of the Student parliament across the school and in the community.
* Business & Resource Cabinet – Performed silent fire drills. Following research on the impact this has on behaviour and safety around the school.
This year we plan on driving the student parliament on to the next level again where it will be mainly pupil run with staff as the facilitators.
We plan to enable the pupils of the Student Parliament to fulfil their actions and recommendations from last year and truly make pupil voice at Pentrehafod fundamental cog in the wheel of our success.
